Jessica Mouse's
Email Surprise
this story is dedicated to my marf friends, Jessica and Mark
School is out, it's really getting hot outside and Jessica wanted to put on play clothes and run around the pumpkin patch with the other mice kids. Instead, Jessica was staring out the window of her Pumpkin Patch home watching the mice kids play. Jessica was hot in her long sleeved, ruffled blouse and long skirt. "Oh", she wondered, "why can't I be like the other mice? Why do I have to be different?". The other young mice made fun of Jessica because she looked different and couldn't run and play like they could. The mice kids had really hurt Jessica's feelings and made her very self-conscious about the way she looked. That's why Jessica always wore long sleeves and ruffles to hide her long legs and unusual chest. She also wore pants and long skirts to hide her long legs...not much to do about her big feet. You see, Jessica has marfan syndrome.
Every since she was a little kid mouse, her mom would not let her run with the other mice her age and she got really tired when she did too much. Jessica really felt alone and different. But, Jessica was very good on the computer. She could do things the other mice did not know how to do. Jessica was very smart and loved to work on the computer. In fact, Jessica had met another mouse her age on the computer last night at her friend, Brian's, marfan site for kids. And, Jessica's new friend had marfan syndrome too! In fact, he was emailing a picture to her today. His name is Mark and he lives in a Watermelon Patch in Texas. "Well," thought Jessica, "it's time to check my email".
Low and behold, there was an email from Mark and an attachment...that was probably the long awaited photo. "My goodness" whispered Jessica, "He looks just like me!". But there was something different about Mark. He looked like Jessica, but he just did not look like someone with something to hide ..... or that he was going to let teasing bother him. In fact, he looked very self-confident. Mark's mom had let him add his phone number to his email and Jessica asked her mom if she could call her new friend. Jessica's mom was thrilled about her daughter's new friend and allowed the call.
Mark answered the phone and was very pleased to hear Jessica's voice. Jessica and Mark talked about all kinds of things...including not being able to do what the other kids did. Mark told Jessica how he had found other interests, like the computer and playing the piano, things to do that did not hurt him. After all, he had the fingers for it....nice and long. They talked about how long their arms, feet and legs were. Mark told Jessica that he thought they were great and besides ''everyone in the Marf Kids Club has the same ''marfan look'' and restrictions on their activities". Wow, now that was something Jessica had never heard of before....but she definitely liked the idea of belonging to a club that was just for her and kids like her!. Mark told her that they were special but not different....not when there was a whole club of mice just like them. They were the same as other mice kids with marfan syndrome.
Jessica spent the rest of the day thinking about what Mark said and finally decided that she was over due for a few changes. Out went the long sleeves and long skirts. Jessica put on her prettiest shorts and shirt that her mom had bought for her....just hoping she would wear them some day. And, Jessica talked her mom into buying her some new glasses.....glasses with bright, modern colors and a ''cool'' look. Then, Jessica decided that even though she could not run with the other mice her age, she could watch them. So she spread a blanket under a shady bush and started drawing pictures. Before she knew it, the other mice kids were joining her and telling what a great idea on a hot, sunny day.
"I have some new friends", thought Jessica. "And I am going to start finding other ways to make friends!". You see, the mice kids noticed Jessica's new attitude and that Jessica was a lot of fun.
